Ever had that feeling someone is watching you?
Nathan Howell did when he looked up and saw a Southern Boobook outside his workplace at Kurnell on Thursday.
‘‘Post-tornado, it sat and watched us in the office all afternoon,’’ he said.
Birds in Backyards website says it is the smallest and most common owl in Australia.
Many of our readers may know it better as the Mopoke, because of its distinctive, loud call. The bird likes to perch on an open branch or tree-top and quietly keep an eye on things.
The bird is identified by its plumage, which is dark chocolate-brown above and rufous-brown below, heavily streaked and spotted with white. The bill is grey with a darker tip, and the feet are grey or yellow. The facial disc is chocolate brown and the eyes are large and yellowish.
