Kogarah will celebrate Chinese New Year in the Town Square on Thursday evening (February 11).
Kogarah mayor Stephen Agius said this was one of the highlights on the council’s events calendar and the council was looking forward to welcoming the Year of the Monkey with the community.
Deputy mayor Annie Tang has been involved in organising Chinese New Year in Kogarah for the past 15 years and has seen it grow from a small community event held at the Kogarah School of Arts to the larger celebration it is today at the Kogarah Town Square.
The event will feature traditional ‘dotting of the eyes’, lion dance and crackers provided by Yau Kung Mun Performers; performances by the Academy of Chinese Culture and the Ocean Dream Cultural Art Centre of Australia; a fashion show by Huangxiang Arts Group and performances by a number of local groups and schools.
This free community event also includes giveaways and lucky door prizes.
Belgrave Street will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event with parking available in the Derby Street car park as well as surrounding streets.
The festivities start at 6pm.
