Ramsgate Public School will host a gold coin community fundraiser on February 19 (5-9pm) for one of its pupils.
Dean, 6, has spinal muscular atrophy (type 3), a severe and progressive condition that affects nerves and movement.
The year 2 pupil uses a manual wheelchair and an older-style power chair when required. The school partnered with Ramsgate Foodies Markets to host a night market to help Dean’s family raise money for a modern, motorised standing wheelchair that costs $45,000.
A powerdrive wheelchair will enable Dean to use his upper limbs, confidently engage with his peers and teachers, and play rugby.
Dean’s mother Cindy Tangimetua said it would increase her son’s independence.
“His muscles are quite weak, he struggles with stairs, and needs help with getting things off shelves,” she said. “A new chair would help him keep up with kids in the playground, and be eye level with people with the click of a button.”
