The waft of pancake batter seeping through the classrooms symbolised the beginning of Lent today.
The annual tradition, which fell on February 9, is a Christian celebration also known as "Pancake Day".
Children enjoyed pancakes for breakfast at St Catherine Laboure Primary School, Gymea, to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
Pupils swapped their usual morning cereal and toast for warm and fluffy pancakes for the event, which the school hosts each year.
Shrove Tuesday marks the final day before the start of the Christian festival of Lent and the forty days leading up to Easter Sunday.
As it was the last day before Lent it was also a day to use up eggs, butters and other fats, which were forbidden during the Lenten fasting period.
