Southern Districts are hoping the next crop of young Wallabies will come from the Sutherland Shire.
For the first time Camp Wallaby will be held in the shire in the April and July school holidays at Menai Rugby Club.
The three-day camps, for players aged seven to 17, will feature leading Australian coaches and current and former Wallabies players who will teach rugby skills to beginner and advanced juniors.
Southern Districts president Brad Devine said the club was hopeful the camps would be part of a pathway that led from junior to elite rugby.
“We’ve worked pretty hard the last few years, we’ve always talked about a pathway from under-6s to the Wallabies,” he said.
“The truth is there’s been gaps in that pathway but we’ve worked hard at Southern Districts to plug them.
“At these camps we’re hoping young players will come along and have so much fun that they can go away and sign up with their local rugby club.”
The program was launched at Sylvania BMW on Wednesday.
Staff at the camps will include legendary forwards coach Topo Rodriguez and former Fiji coach Gregg Mumm.
There will be a number of past and present Wallabies in attendance over the three days.
The ARU will also provide junior development staff at the camps to identify young talent for their Pathways to Gold program.
The camps will be held at The Ridge Playing Fields, Recreation Drive, Barden Ridge, with the first to run from April 11 to 13.
