Banks MP David Coleman is pleased that a large number of schools in the electorate have been making the most of funding available under the Sporting Schools Program.
Through the program the federal government made $100 million available to schools to allow for the expansion of their sporting curriculum.
This allows local coaches and sporting clubs to run sports classes within schools before, during or after school.
St George, schools including Oatley Public, Mortdale Public, Lugarno Public and Oatley West Public Schools have all been granted funds to facilitate classes in sports including basketball, volleyball, hockey, AFL and cricket.
‘‘Unfortunately only one third of children are managing to get the recommended hour of physical activity a day and only half of our kids are involved in sport,’’ Mr Coleman said.
He said the Sporting Schools program allowed primary school children to sample a diversity of sports.
