Bridge widening, sand dunes, graffiti and crossing the Kingsway

As a shire resident I would like to ask our state MP Lee Evans if he could please let us know about the upgrade for the narrow Heathcote Road bridge. 

We all know it urgently requires widening with two lanes going either way to join up to the extra lanes on Heathcote Road at the Menai side and the Heathcote end. 

This bridge was built to transport army vehicles during World War 2 and has never been changed. 

Also, I have approached Mr Evans’s office on four occasions about extending the school zone signs for Heathcote East Primary School in Parklands Avenue  to the full length of the street, but have had no response.

Re ‘’Homes at Boat Harbour’’ (Leader, February 10).

As a local resident for more than 60 years I have seen the sad succession of destructive development on the peninsular from the demolition of magnificent sand dunes to the installation of heavy industry and housing estates.

From Cronulla to Kurnell the area has been mined, denuded and destroyed. Now the current proposal appears to put the final nails in the coffin of what was a pristine and viable natural area.

It’s been a while since we’ve had any anti-graffiti letters, but there’d have to be a few who still believe it wouldn’t be all that difficult to convict a percentage of the army of un-employed artists out there.

It would mean maintaining a 24/7 specific, “Graffiti Hotline” with residents also prepared to take a few minutes of their time to pick up the phone. 

However without this hotline and not one of the Greens or Labor leaders concerned or even prepared to relate back to me what they intend to do regarding our graffiti problem…I guess we’ll just have to go on pretending it is art.

I would like to complain about the poor decisions made by boys from De La Salle College Caringbah on their journey home from school in the afternoons.  

Most these boys do not seem to have the patience to walk up to the traffic lights on the Kingsway where the train station is at Caringbah, and just run across the roads in large groups when they think it is safe.  

It is not only stupid for them not to use the correct crossing method, they are also putting drivers at risk by running in groups across the road before the lights change. 

Over the past year I have noticed people, who I presume are staff at the school, attempt to direct these boys to the lights on what I presume is an after-school duty.

The problem is, with only one staff member a day, it is very difficult to make a large number of boys cross correctly on a very long stretch of road.

Although at the end of the day, it is up to these boys to make the correct decisions regarding not only their safety but the safety of others. 

In my opinion, there should by a barrier in the middle strip of the Kingsway to prevent people from dangerously crossing the road.

Having just this afternoon disposed of some bagged dog droppings left on our nature strip I totally agree with the comments of Stephen Dixon (‘’In the bag", Your View, February 3). To the minority of dog owners that leave their mess for others to clean up - please have more consideration.
