For many women, having a baby is a blissful experience.
But for others, the journey towards motherhood can also be an ongoing struggle, often leaving women feeling lost.
To help mums feel that they are not alone, a new support group is coming to Sutherland Shire.
The free perinatal (pregnancy and post-natal) group aims to assist women in overcoming depression and anxiety following the birth of their child.
With a focus on peer social connection, the group encourage participants to share experiences.
It is run by perinatal psychologist and doula, Narelle Horwitz.
The childbirth educator and mother of three said she became increasingly aware of the challenges faced by women after she had children.
“I noticed women who were coming in for counselling were talking about how isolated they felt,” she said.
“The perinatal period is a roller-coaster ride full of ups and downs.
“Pregnancy and the transition to life as a new parent can be a time of mixed emotions.
“While joy, happiness and excitement may accompany the news of a pregnancy almost all woman and their partners will experience some fear, apprehension and sadness about what this means for themselves, their family and their future.”
She said the arrival of a baby also triggered conflicting emotions.
“Some mums go on about how wonderful things are but for others there may be an ongoing chronic situation,” she said.
“I wanted to create a space for women to get a connection.
“The main purpose of the group is to bring women together in a safe space where they can learn from those also going through similar challenges.”
The first group begins May 16 at Sylvania.
There is no fee but there is a contribution box for people who would like to contribute to the cost of morning tea and room hire.
