Organisers of the 15th Sutherland Relay for Life say they expect last weekend’s event will raise close to $500,000, bring the overall total they have raised close to $6 million for Cancer Council NSW.
An estimated 7000 people attended this year’s relay held at the Sylvania Waters Athletics Track.
Relay for Life organising committee co-chair Rod Coy said there were many highlights.
“About 1000 people turned up for the candlelight vigil to join the people who were already there.
“The banquet was successful as for the first time in three years the rain stayed away on the Saturday night. We ended up forming a mosh pit when the band the Rock Dogs came on.”
Mr Coy and organising committee co-chair Luke Barbuto said they would like to give a big thank you to the people of Sylvania who once again let the relay into their area.
“There was goodwill all around,’’ Mr Coy said.
“The highlight was the reverse lap where survivors and carers walk around the track in the opposite direction and all the relayers gave them a high-five wishing them all the best for their journey, and they in turn thanked the relayers for all their support.’’
