The death of Bundeena resident Tina Kontozis adds poignancy to The Shire’s Night Out, which will be held in Cronulla mall on Friday night.
A tribute will be paid to Ms Kontozis during a wide-ranging event, which will look at ways to prevent domestic violence and show support for victims.
Organisers are expecting a big turnout for the event, which will be held in the covered stage area, starting at 7pm.
An all-night vigil and sleepout for some will follow.
Glenn Wheeler hopes to attend, and former Sharks rugby league star Jason Stevens is also scheduled to speak.
Russell Kinred and Rev George Capsis, of Community Outreach Ministries, said it was an opportunity for the community to “figuratively draw a line in the sand” on domestic violence and “show empathy, solidarity and leadership”.
Rev Capsis said they began planning the event in September last year after seeing something similar at North Sydney.
“We have prepared a one-page list of services that are available for those experiencing this situation,” he said.
“There will be discussion on a range of initiatives, from early intervention and providing more accommodation to seeking volunteers to mind pets for those escaping violence.
“Overcoming isolation and setting up practical support groups are other matters to be considered.”
Those attending are asked to bring a folding chair.
