The life of architect Francis Greenway will be the topic of the next meeting of the Kogarah Historical Society.
Author Alasdair McGregor will speak on the life of Greenway based off his biography ‘A forger’s progress: The life of Francis Greenway’ which was published in 2014.
Sentenced to death for forgery before being granted an eleventh-hour reprieve, Greenway was transported to New South Wales in 1814.
As Australia’s first government architect he dreamt of a city the equal of any across the world.
In his early life he had exhibited at London’s Royal Academy and worked with John Nash who was considered the most fashionable architect of his day.
Despite his dreams his final days were spent in miserable poverty and his passing at the age of 59 went unnoticed and unrecorded.
