Sutherland actress Melissa Spiteri will perform the role of Gwen in Australia’s much-loved play ‘Away’.
Spiteri, who is also the president of the Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble, has been performing for stage and screen for more than 25 years.
‘Away’ marks 30 years since the play premiered at the Griffin Theatre Company in 1986.
Written by Michael Gow, ‘Away’ tells the story of three families on separate holidays as they are united during a fierce storm.
Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are faced with their son Tom’s terminal illness.
Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with the socially unsuitable Tom.
While Roy is unable to console a grief-stricken Coral over the death of their only son in Vietnam.
Director Tony Woollams, who also plays Spiteri’s on-stage husband Jim, said she was suited to the role.
“Melissa suited the role of the Australian matriarch Gwen and has the range of emotions to bring to the stage the journey of discovery that Gwen’s character embarks on.”
‘Away’ opened yesterday at the Casual Powerhouse Arts Centre, Casula.
Bookings can be made through boxoffice@casulapowerhouse.com,casulapowerhouse.com or by phoning 9824 1121.
