SUMMER may be over, but now is not the time to let your guard down with termites.
Whilst Termites thrive in warm temperatures, Southpest director Michael Bell said they are a threat to homes all year round.
“Termites are still active even without humid temperatures,” he said. “This is an ideal time for households to have an annual check to locate possible termite entry, identify vulnerable situations and implement a program to prevent unwanted attacks.”
The first sign of a termite attack can often be well after they have already settled into your home. “Obvious signs can include mud trails, blistered paint in places like window and door architraves, small holes appearing in gyprock walls, and timbers in your home that feel soft and spongy,” Mr Bell said.
“Examining window sills and skirting boards for wood softness and signs of mud packing can give a good indication of an attack, although we recommend leaving it up to professionals at least once a year.” Mr Bell said preventive measures like improving the airflow or ventilation under your home is important or alternatively, keeping the slab edges exposed if you are on a concrete slab.
“You should not store timber close to the house and all water leaks should be fixed as termites like damp conditions,” he said. “Southpest have a range of the latest technology to assist with the detection of termite activity. These include a FLIR Thermal Imaging Camera and a TERMATRAC unit which uses microwave technology.”
