The Cancer Care Centre Foundation has moved one step closer to finalisation with the addition of a new floor on top of the Pitney Building at St George Public Hospital.
The committee, initiated in 1995 to build the Cancer Care Lodge (Bezzina House) then developed the first Prostate Cancer Institute in Australia where every treatment option was available under the one roof.
Following the launch of the Prostate Cancer Institute in 2011, the committee established two levels of Clinical Trials and Research facility in the adjoining Pitney Building and office space on the top level.
The committee headed by Warren O’Rourke with Hon Brian Langton, Phill Bates AM, Rob Robson, Dr Bill Lynch, Andrew Bridgeman and Dr Winston Liauw, are committed to refurbish and expand the centre.
With the outstanding support of Club Central and commitment from Mark Coure, Oatley MP in attracting financial support from the NSW Government, the final stage is close to a reality. Named the Club Central Chemotherapy Centre, it will see 20 new chemotherapy chairs, four specific bedrooms and more clinician rooms.
Warren O’Rourke said: “This has been a long journey but one that has been of enormous benefit to the community. Bezzina House has now provided in excess of 64,000 room nights to people who have been affected by cancer and treated at St George Hospital. Men of all ages who have had a positive outcome have also benefited and all cancer sufferers will benefit from the expansion of the Cancer Centre”.
The community has now raised in excess of $10 million with the final stage to push this out to more than $13 million.
“The completion of this project would not have been possible without the work from the committee and outstanding support from the community,” O’Rourke said.
“A good example is support from small business like the White Horse Coffee Shop at Sutherland. For the past five years they have raised funds from tips to employees in the month of November and passed on close to $30,000 towards the Prostate Cancer Institute. Last year was a record $9550 from White Horse which demonstrates the incredible community support.”
