Sons of Sun, the musical play about the famous Sun Records in Memphis where legends including Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash started their careers, returns to the Brass Monkey next week.
Written by Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll, the show tells the story through the character of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips.
Subtitled Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny and Me the show is told through the character of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, his assistant Marion Keisker, and the famous musicians that Sam recorded.
The show features a three-piece live band fronted by John Kennedy, performing thirty-five songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many more.
The tenacious Sam Phillips is played by Sydney actor, Matt Charleston, with co-stars Victoria Beck and Ben Maclaine taking on multiple roles from Sam’s assistant Marion Keisker to Howlin’ Wolf.
Sons of Sun first premiered at the Sandringham Hotel, Newtown about two years ago and has since toured Australia including a performance at the Sydney Opera House.
Sydney musician John Kennedy, of Love Gone Wrong fame began developing the show in 2011 with the release of his Sons of Sun Vol 1 CD.
Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll wrote an accompanying script to Kennedy' renditions.
The show is directed by Louise Fischer and music is performed by John Kennedy, Murray Cook and Paul Scott
Sons of Sun - Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny and Me (The Sam Phillips Story) will be at the Brass Monkey, 115a Cronulla Street, Cronulla on Thursday, May 26.
