The Sutherland Entertainment Centre marks 40 years of entertaining the shire next month and a specially commissioned concert, Classic Rock of 1976 is being held to celebrate.
Performers Simon Meli, Mitch Anderson, Nicky Kurta, Tim Moxey and Carmel Mesiti will belt out a program of the 70s rock classics that dominated the airwaves back in the 1970s.
Engadine local Tim Moxey will be familiar to many for his appearance on Channel 9’s The Voice in 2013.
Musical director Joseph Calderazzo and and all-star band will be supporting them.
It’s a big month for the Sutherland Entertainment Centre which will also host the 40th Anniversary of the annual Sutherland Shire Mayoral Debutante Charity Ball on Saturday, June 4.
The Sutherland Entertainment Centre was opened by the then Governor of NSW Sir Roden Cutler in June, 1976 in the presence of then shire president Michael Tynan.
It was the year that The Eagles, the Bee Gees and Fleetwood Mac were in the charts. Billboard’s number one song of the year was Silly Love Songs by Wings and one of the biggest hits was December, 1963 by The Four Seasons.
Sutherland mayor Carmelo Pesce said the the concert should bring back many memories for the audience.
“Forty years ago the doors opened for the first time at Sutherland Entertainment Centre and to celebrate the occasion we have a specially commissioned one-off performance that will take you back to 1976 and all the favourite classic rock songs,’’ he said.
“I don’t think there would be many Shire residents who haven’t been to Sutherland Entertainment Centre at least once over the past 40 years.
“It’s been the heart of the shire’s performing arts and holds plenty of nostalgia for the community who have celebrated some of their most memorable occasions like formals, weddings, school presentations and dance concerts, not to mention 40 Mayoral Debutante Charity Balls.
‘’Whether you have been a loyal patron of SEC or are attending for the first time, this will be a celebratory night to remember.’’
For the Classic Rock of 1976 concert, the audience is being encouraged to get in the spirit and dress the part with a prize to be awarded for the best 1976 costume of the night.
The evening can be completed with a two-course dinner that will have some 1970s flourishes to add to the taste of the 70s.
The Classics of Rock concert celebrating the entertainment centre’s 40th anniversary will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 8pm.
Tickets are $49 per person or $39 per person for groups or six or more.
