The popular National Walk to School Day was a big hit in St George and Sutherland Shire this year, with pupils strolling on foot and wheeling their bikes and scooters through the school gates.
Parents of the Kyeemagh Public School community left their cars at home and accompanied their children on the morning walk to class.
The annual community event was developed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia and aims to promote road safety, public transport and the environment.
National Walk to School Day also encourages children to learn about the importance of being active.
In 2015, police recorded 16,336 illegal actions in school zones, with 11,568 infringed for speed-related offences.
In the five years to 2015, 14 pedestrians between the ages of five and 16 were killed on NSW roads.
The Centre for Road Safety has also developed a free, online learning resource for teachers and families to help promote key road safety messages.
