Re the article ‘‘Concerns for cyclists safety’’ (Leader, May 18).
I know controversial statements get a response but facts work better.
Councillor Kevin Schreiber says that cyclists are constantly riding three-wide on Captain Cook Drive. In four years of riding there I have never seen that, ever.
Sure, sometimes riders have to almost move into the driving lane because the road has trees, dirt, sand, and debris in the cycling lane. At some points there is virtually no cycling lane left to ride in.
Council needs to do some work on the road, trees and edges, especially around the tip area where it is dangerous for cyclists even in single file.
I am sorry that one resident feels "under siege" but I can assure her that everybody that I know or have met does not have a bad attitude towards the community.
When she said that cyclists come flat out down Torres Street, she is talking about 20 to 30 km/h.
I had to laugh at the comment "but these cyclists just ride down the middle of the road without stopping".
Cyclists ride down the road with a bit of separation from the parked cars so that when the car doors are opened the cyclists are not knocked off their bikes and of course they don’t stop unless someone pulls out of a driveway, walks across the road or something else happens.
I am sure that there would be some cyclists who may do the wrong thing occasionally but everybody I see and know rides to the road rules and are very courteous at all times.
The cyclists are the ones who would be injured in an accident, and thus virtually every one of them takes great care to avoid having any type of incident or doing anything that could cause an accident.
Perhaps Mrs Anderson would prefer people ride motorbikes or drive cars or trucks out to Kurnell rather than push bikes, she seems very upset about cyclists.
I thought Cr Schreiber would have a neutral view on this but he says some things that are his opinion and not shared by many.
