The afternoon clearway on Sundays and public holidays for north-bound traffic on Princes Highway at Heathcote is set to be extended year round.
The change could possibly be made in time for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June.
At present, the clearway operates between 3pm and 7pm from October until the end of April between Jennings Road and Heathcote Roads.
Roads and Maritime Services has sought community feedback on extending the clearway year round.
Heathcote MP Lee Evans said feedback on the proposal was required by Monday, June 6.
The Queen';s Birthday is celebrated the following weekend, and a decision could possibly be made before then.
Mr Evans said the present clearway on Sundays and public holidays was introduced in March, 2011.
“Congestion frequently peaks on Sunday afternoons as many people travel northbound towards Sydney,” he said.
“Extending the clearway to operate on Sundays and public holidays between 3pm and 7pm all year round would help manage congestion for around 20,000 northbound motorists who use the major corridor on during those times.”
Roads and Maritime Services said Princes Highway was identified in the Sydney Clearway Strategy for investigation.
The strategy aims to maximise use of existing road space, increase traffic flow on one of Sydney’s major arterial roads and reduce travel times to get people moving faster.
RMS said the proposal would complement other clearways along the corridor including from Kirrawee to Blakehurst.
