Former Australian international cricketer Glenn McGrath put IGA store staff through their paces with a cricket lesson recently when he accepted a donation of $195,000 for the McGrath Foundation raised by IGA stores across the country.
Taking part in the cricket match at the headquarters of IGA supplier Metcash at Macquarie Park were IGA Menai retailer Vanita Jain, IGA Menai manager Kaela Sweeny and Metcash chief executive officer Supermarkets Steven Cain.
Since 2009 IGA’s independent retailers across the country have raised over $720,000 for the McGrath Foundation.
McGrath Foundation chief executive officer Petra Buchanan said the support of IGA has allowed the foundation to fund two IGA McGrath breast care nurses at Northam in country West Australia and Myrtleford in Victoria.
“This partnership allows our two IGA McGrath Breast Care Nurses to continue providing essential, free support to families experiencing breast cancer from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment,” Ms Buchanan said.
The cricket match also marked the start of a promotion to raise further funds for the McGrath Foundation with 20 cents raised from every specially marked 1kg bag of Pink Lady, Red Delicious, Granny Smith or Royal Gala apples sold at IGA stores between May 25 and June 21 going to the McGrath Foundation.
