Rockdale Council has installed two large electric mixers into Scarborough Ponds to help ease the smell after hundreds of fish died in the creek.
Numerous resident have contacted the Leader about the smell which they say can be smelt kilometres away.
Monterey resident Maria Brynes said she could hardly stand the smell.
‘’The smell has become gut wrenching you could swear that your sewer mains had burst and there was sewerage everywhere,’’ she said.
Fellow Monterey local Nanette Wilcox agrees.
‘’It is nauseously overpowering,’’ she said.
‘’Windows have to be tightly shut to stop the stench from permeating the interior of the house.
‘’Who do we have to go to to get action? It is become unbearable.’’
Local Amy Breke said she has noticed the smell ever since the problem started.
‘’It's like raw sewerage and it just keeps wafting across the suburbs,’’ she said.
’’I can't imagine how those poor people are living right next to that stench.’’
A Rockdale Council spokesman said the smell came from a process called temperature inversion.
The natural phenomena occurs when the lighter oxygen rich surface layer rolls over bringing the oxygen depleted bottom sediments to the surface.
This leads to the exposure of aquatic vegetation and sediment that leads to the release of hydrogen sulphide which has a rotten egg smell.
‘’Council is aware of the ongoing odour issue at Scarborough Ponds and is addressing this natural phenomena that is common to all lakes and waterways,’’ he said.
‘’To address this problem council has installed two large electric mixers in the ponds to gently mix the oxygen rich surface layer with the oxygen depleted lower layers.’’
It is hoped a heavy rain will also ease the problem.
