It was back to school for a group of Jannali great grandparents recently.
The residents of Anglicare’s Chesalon residential care centre at Jannali visited the local Kinder Haven preschool to teach the youngsters the art of a perfectly baked scone.
Children of up to five years-old and got messy making dough with their adoptive great grandparents as they work out how to cook together.
“This was our residents’ third visit to the preschool and it is one way we are helping them maintain connections with their community,’’ Chesalon’s lifestyle co-ordinator Kelly Rogers said.
“ It also gives them something to look forward to, as well as a sense of purpose.
“We’ve notice these visits make our residents feel young again. We also promote exercise by walking them down to the early childhood centre.
“It has been wonderful to see how both the children and residents benefit from an outing like this.
‘’The children learn valuable social skills like respecting their elders and the importance of community service.
‘Our residents are revitalized after a visit. It assists their memory and promotes better mental health.
“It is very rewarding to see our residents’ reactions. These experiences bring out their personality and we find that many residents are still talking about the visit days later.”
