Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s granddaughter Isla stole the show when he visited Hurstville in the final days of the federal election campaign.
Mr Turnbull and his wife Lucy travelled by train to Hurstville before a street walk and lunch at Sunny Harbour Yum Cha restaurant.
While the reception they received was not of the rock star magnitude afforded to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the presence at lunch of the couple’s young granddaughter generated great excitement.
Isla was with her father Alex, who married Chinese born Yvonne Wang, or Wang Yi Wenyjer, a public relations adviser, in 2012 while working In Singapore.
Barton MP Nick Varvaris said “it’s always great to have the Prime Minister in the electorate – it shows his interest in the area”.
Mr Varvaris said Isla’s presence was definitely “the highlight”.
Mr Turnbull had a tougher time at a media conference where he attempted to clear up growing confusion about a national plebiscite on same-sex marriage.
