St George Private Hospital is hosting a free community weight loss seminar this month.
The hospital is the first internationally accredited Centre of Excellence for Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery, as recognised by the Surgical Review Corporation (USA) which accredits surgical centres of excellence around the world.
It is the nation’s highest volume bariatric hospital.
A panel of experts including bariatric surgeon Vytauras Kuzinkovas and nutritionist Susie Burrell will speak at the forum on July 28.
Topics include how to lose weight before surgery, how hormones affects weight loss, and plastic and cosmetic surgery following significant weight loss.
Research by the US Center of Disease Control and Prevention shows that many cancers are linked to obesity, and obesity can cut short a person’s life by up to 14 years on average.
Dr Kuzinkovas says exercise remains the key factor in maintaining a healthy weight.
“Australia has one of the fastest growing rates of obesity in the world and if by 2025 more than 80 per cent of Australians will be obese or overweight,” he said.
“And this weight doesn’t just affect the way people look. A severely obese patient has an increased risk of premature death and diabetes, not to mention asthma, sleep apnoea and arthritis. Many of these conditions resolve or diminish with surgery.”
