Residents turned out in droves to learn what is planned for the redevelopment of Illawong Shopping Village.
Planning consultant JBA said 243 people attended the session on Thursday evening at Illawong Community Centre.
A total of 140 apartments in four blocks, and an upgraded Coles supermarket, are included in the proposed $75 million project.
Available to answer questions at the “drop in” session were an architect, traffic consultant, planner, community engagement team members and representatives pf development company CCS Property Holdings Group.
Project information was provided on display boards, questions could be asked of the project team and feedback forms were provided.
JBA said consultation meetings had also been held with tenants of the shopping village and the adjoining Menai Illawong Uniting Church.
The shopping centre, at present, has a Coles supermarket, specialty shops and car parking.
The proposal includes upgrading the Coles supermarket, retail and specialty shops, 140 residential apartments, 217 car parking spaces for the residential component and 261 spaces for shopping centre customers.
In a statement, CCS Property Holdings Group development manager Martin Cork thanked members of the community “who took the time on a rainy Thursday night” to attend the information session.
“We are still at the early stages of preparing plans for any potential redevelopment, and we would anticipate that any eventual construction on the site to be at least three to five years away,” he said.
“All feedback will be incorporated in the preparation of a development application.
“We’ll continuity to talk to the community as these plans are prepared and throughout any development process.”
