The NSW government’s plan to ban greyhound racing has staff at Sydney Dogs and Cats Home hoping for another move – to keep its shelter thriving.
The Carlton animal shelter, which is Sydney’s only charity pound, is slated for re-development.
It launched an online petition earlier this year, with the aim of helping with the acquisition of a site to build a new community facility.
So far more than 19,000 people have pledged their support to keep the shelter up and running in the community.
The non-profit organisation has a strong presence on Facebook and continues to run its social media campaign.
It is also pushing ahead with fundraising for a new facility on a new site as part of a relocation fund.
On its latest Facebook post, the shelter stated it was impressed with NSW Premier Mike Baird’s decision to help stop cruel treatment of greyhounds.
It stated that between the greyhound announcement, council amalgamations and a shift in community expectation towards ‘no-kill', demand for its services has rapidly grown.
“We know first hand that out-of-work greyhounds make great pets,” it stated.
“We expect to open our doors to many of them in the months ahead. But, we need to make sure we still have doors to open.”
“We’re still looking for a new home.
“We're pleased to hear the government has said it would "leave no stone unturned" to find us new digs.
“Now more than ever we are extremely optimistic about our future.
“We've been caring for animals in need for the past 70 years, and we sure as heck aren't stopping now.”
