Up to 10,000 people are estimated to have rolled up for the opening of Shire Farmers’ Market at Sutherland on Saturday.
Market operator Jim McMahon said it was “magnificent” response to what was an obvious need in the shire.
“It is estimated 9000 to 10,000 people were there on the day,” he said.
”The stall holders were delighted, and they have all re-booked for next week.
“They say they will double or triple the amount of stock next Saturday.”
Mr McMahon said it would take a few weeks for the market to bed down.
“In week seven, we will call for permanent bookings, so stall holders will know exactly where they will be located,” he said.
Mr McMahon said, having looked at more than 50 markets all over the world, he was sure there was sufficient space between stalls.
“If you give more space, the stalls just spread out and there is no more room for the public,” he said.
The market, which was held in the council car park in Flora Street, was packed all morning and many stalls had run out of goods by 10.30am.
There were traffic jams in surrounding streets, and some market-goers parked a kilometre or more away and walked.
The market will operate each Saturday “rain, hail or shine” from 8am to 1pm.
