As water began lapping at her back door during June’s wild storms Jessica Whiteoak had enough.
For years she complained to Rockdale Council about the creek behind her Sans Souci house that had been overtaken by weeds and regularly burst its banks after a few days of heavy rain.
The family has lived in the Bonanza Parade house for decades but only noticed a problem around eight years ago when maintenance stopped.
Since then the creek is regularly clogged by rubbish and weeds.
‘’There used to be ducks and eels but now there’s nothing like that now,’’ she said.
‘’It’s disgusting. All the rubbish flows from Rocky Point Road into the creek.
‘’It just stinks in summer.’’
Mrs Whiteoak said it was at its worst during last years March storms when the creek flooded sending water into their bedroom.
It destroyed carpet and their belongings and they were forced to re-concrete the room.
She started a neighbourhood petition and contacted Rockdale Council without result.
The situation has left her nervous everytime it rains.
‘’We’re just sick of it,’’ she said.
‘’This is the last straw. What are they waiting for? For someone to be injured.’’
A Rockdale Council spokesman said they had been undertaking work north of the Bado Berong Creek in Hornbury Street.
‘’The stage one works are concentrated to protecting various species of plant and animals but council is also tackling the growth of noxious weeds and acid sulfate soil,’’ he said.
‘’This stage of the works is nearly complete and stage two, which involves spot dredging, will commence and alleviate the current flooding issues.
‘’The work has not stopped, it still continues today, in fact it has now reached Ritchie Street.’’
