Acclaimed writer and director Sean Nash will share his tips of the trade during a workshop at Ramsgate next week.
During his long career he has worked on countless Australian shows and films including Prisoner, Water Rats, All Saints and Home and Away.
He has won four awards in the Australian Writers’ Guild Awards and been shortlisted in the NSW Premier’s Literary Award.
He got into writing by accident; penning his first words while amending a script on a show he was directing.
‘’It was a big learning process for me,’’ he said.
‘’But I found directing and writing complimented each other.
He said the tip for good writing was less is more.
’’If there’s a phrase you don’t need then get rid of it,’’ he said.
’’In an ideal world the perfect script is one you can’t cut a line from.
’’The key is being truthful. For me the truth has to come from the character.’’
During the workshop, organised by Rockdale Rotary, he will teach budding writers on how to get started.
’’It’s an old chestnut but it’s true; just write,’’ he said.
’’If you’re serious then start writing short stories which can become a short film.
’’I don’t want people to be intimidated by writing.
’’The trick is to take it off the pedestal.’’
