The new Coalition government says last-minute election promises by former MP for Barton Nick Varvaris will be honoured.
However, the new MP for Barton Linda Burney said she was sceptical because no details on timing were given.
Mr Varvaris went on a splurge in the final days of the campaign, promising $4 million for St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation and smaller amounts for sporting facilities and CCTV cameras in shoppig strips.
He made the medical research grant with foundation chairman John Edmonds, director Madeline Tynan, head of the St George and Sutherland Clinical School, Professor Michael Grimm, Harvard professor Richard Stevens and scientist Lislaine Wensing.
A statement from a Coalition spokesman, issued from the office of the Minister for Health and Minister for Sport Sussan Ley, said, “All Coalition election commitments to the electorate of Barton are fully funded and will be delivered by the Coalition Government”.
“At this early stage it is impossible to confirm any set timing arrangements,” the statement said.
Ms Burney said she would do everything possible to see the promises were kept, and she would be “holding this government accountable”.
“For a party that claims it is superior on budget management it is very surprising it doesn't even know which financial year funding will be provided, she said.
St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation Chief executive peter Christopher said the $4 million commitment was “the single most significant boost to the foundation”.
“It’s welcomed as we head to our tenth anniversary in 2017,” he said.
“This infrastructure grant will assist in our mission to support life-saving and life-changing medical research, for which we continue to raise funds.
“We thank everyone involved in making this happen.”
