Oatley MP Mark Coure has launched a community campaign against plans for a tenfold increase in the processing capacity of the waste and recycling centre in Hearne Street, Mortdale.
Mr Coure has started a petition, which will be submitted as part of the Department of Planning and Environment’s community consultation.
Under the proposal, reported by the Leader on Friday, the number of heavy vehicle movements around the site would more than double, to 430 a day.
Mr Coure said the increase in truck traffic would place added pressure on roads in the area.
“Local roads including Hearne Street, Roberts Avenue and Boundary Road are already at capacity,” he said.
“I am a realist and appreciate our waste needs to be transported, broken down and removed, but careful consideration needs to be given to selecting an appropriate site and the middle of Mortdale is not a good site.”
Mr Coure said much of the waste would come from outside the area.
Under the plans, the quantity of non-putrescible waste processed by the privately owned facility would increase from 30,000 tonnes to 300,000 tonnes per year.
Non-putrescible waste includes metal, timber, paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, ceramics, asphalt, soils, bricks and concrete.
