Three talented pupils from St George and Sutherland Shire are vying for the title of Young Archie 2016, an award that celebrates young Australian talent.
This is the fourth year of the Archie awards, which runs alongside the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes.
Artists between the ages of 5-18 were invited to submit a portrait of someone who was special to them and played a significant role in their life.
The three budding artists from the region are finalists in the 5-8 age category.
Sutherland’s Indigo-Rose Kraij, 8, created a painting of her best friend, Ivy.
“She is kind, nice, pretty and helpful,” Indigo-Rose said.
“She is always there for me.”
Advikaa Nageswaramurthy, 6, of Rockdale, painted a portrait of her mother.
“I love my mummy,” Advikaa said.
“She buys me beautiful dresses, cooks my favourite dishes and always cares for me.”
Jannali’s Andrew Yao, 8, made a self-portrait, re-imagining himself as a vampire.
Five finalists from each age category are on exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW until October 9.
One winner will be chosen in each category and announced on September 17.
The 2016 competition was judged by artist and previous Archibald Prize winner, Del Kathryn Barton, and the gallery’s senior coordinator of education and family programs, Victoria Collings.
Children were rewarded on merit and originality.
Each finalist receives an art pack and Archibald catalogue, and each winner receives a catalogue, $100 from ANZ, an art hamper and family pass to a paid exhibition at the gallery.
