Sydney Dogs and Cats Home has been announced as one of five winners of the Georges River Council Green Grants Fund.
The program, which started in 2008 under the former Kogarah Council, has provided more than $100,000 in funding to schools, community groups and businesses for environmental and sustainable projects.
This year Sydney Dogs and Cats Home, St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Carlton South Public School, Kogarah Public School and Kogarah Community Services were announced as the 2016 winners.
Community groups will receive up to $3,000 per project while local businesses could apply for up to $5,000.
Georges River Council administrator John Rayner congratulated the winners.
“Small organisations often have great ideas, but struggle to fund those ideas and make them a reality," he said.
“Georges River Council is committed to continuing the strong environmental and sustainable focus for community members and the local area through this and other programs.”
