The people behind Venus Reception Centre in Kogarah have been appointed the new leaseholders at the former Club Blakehurst site in Kyle Bay.
Georges River Council, as the owner of Kyle Bay on Georges, made the announcement last week.
Zippo’s Restaurant and Bar has been operating out of the Merriman Place site for the past several years after Club Blakehurst went into liquidation in 2010.
They announced last month they will leave the site.
Diana Valsamis will join her brother George Christodoulou as the driving forces behind the new project.
They have years of hospitality experience behind them.
‘’We’re very excited to say the least,’’ she said.
‘’It’s an amazing location that has a lot of potential.’’
They plan to start extensive renovations as soon as they move in September.
They will transform the existing bistro into a bar and grill and introduce a new waterfront cafe that will be open for breakfast and lunch.
There will be an event space upstairs as well as a small library space that will document the history of the site.
There will be a two-tier opening with the cafe and bar and grill expected to open in time for summer.
Georges River Council administrator John Rayner said the decision was made after a number of tenders were submitted.
“Council has had a long and proud partnership in the management and maintenance of this site with businesses over the years,’’ he said.
‘’We are confident that the successful lessee, Venus Reception Centre, will be sensitive to the needs of local residents and club members, and provide an interesting offering to the community.
“The lease for the use of Kyle Bay on Georges includes provisions for Blakehurst Bowling Club to continue its use of the facility under current terms, including car park usage, office space, and of course access to the bowling greens.
“An assessment panel determined that Venus Reception Centre had the most meritorious application, demonstrating good value for money and a significant investment in the site in the form of a refurbishment project, which will benefit the community.
“Council worked with the current occupant, Zippo’s Restaurant and Bar, to give them extra time to make their arrangements.’’
Ms Valsamis said she hopes the new club will entice locals and visitors alike.
‘’It’s always great to have a good local. We want to keep the community vibe,’’ she said.
‘’We’re very excited. Once it comes together it will be an amazing spot.’’
