Opening on Westfield Hurstville’s newly renovated rooftop dining precinct, Lilong by Taste of Shanghai is giving southern Sydney a taste of authentic Shanghai cuisine.
Inspired by the Lilong alleyway neighbourhoods of his childhood in Shanghai, owner Aaron Mi wanted to bring his much-loved memories to life in Sydney.
‘‘I never ate at home, I ate at my neighbour’s place,’’ he says.
‘‘I wanted to bring the Lilong concept over to Sydney, and create a welcoming experience where it feels like you’re spending time in someone’s lounge room.’’
A menu consisting of exciting new dishes and some of sister-brand Taste of Shanghai’s crowd favourites was designed with sharing in mind, with dishes that emulate a childhood spent growing up and eating with friends and neighbours.
A key focus for Lilong, Taste of Shanghai’s signature dumplings are a quintessential family favourite.
‘‘I helped my mum and dad to make dumplings, which we ate almost every day,’’ he says.
‘‘They’re quick, easy to make, and great to share.’’
Patrons can watch as Lilong’s expert dumpling makers create their tasty little parcels before your very eyes.
Signature dishes include: the acclaimed house-made xiao long bao; san choy bao; beef and baby celery dumplings and lamb and spring onion dumplings, both of which are unique to Lilong.
Other favourites include pork and chive dumpling and stir fried snow pea sprouts.
Opening its first restaurant in Ashfield in 2005, Taste of Shanghai is a crowd favourite, with three more venues including Eastwood, Hurstville, and World Square.
Lilong by Taste of Shanghai is a slice of laneway living atop the rooftop of Westfield Hurstville.
An aged, retro interior emulates the traditional homes which can be found in Shanghai, while pops of contemporary colour and graphics add a modern touch.
Flanking either side of the restaurant are two laneways with bamboo framing, hanging plants and hanging lanterns creating an intimate feel.
Lilong by Taste of Shanghai opened late last month.
The restaurant can be found at shop 1-PA, level four, Westfield Hurstville.
