Aldi’s plans to redevelop the old Caringbah Marketplace site have stalled.
The supermarket giant wants to link a proposed new store and 58 apartments with an air bridge to a multi-storey car park on the council-owned car park at the rear.
One level of the car park would be for Aldi customers and the remainder for normal public parking.
However, Sutherland Shire Council and Aldi are believed to be a long way apart on the financial arrangements.
The matter was discussed in closed session at the council’s last meeting, where it was to be decided whether Aldi’s proposal should be publicly exhibited.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce said nothing was decided.
“The ball is in Aldi’s court,” he said.
“Aldi has the opportunity to come to the party, but at this stage we are not going to do anything further.”
Cr Pesce said it would be a matter for the new council, to be elected on September 10.
The council owns only the middle section of the existing public car park behind the Caringbah Marketplace site, plus a right of way from Banksia Road.
The front portion of the car park land is privately owned, and leased by the council.
The owner of the Banksia Road property has lodged a stand-alone development application for a nine storey apartment block.
Originally, that owner was part of negotiations for a multi-storey car park, but that element is not part of the DA.
