The former golf cart storage shed at The Ridge Golf Course has provided Menai Men’s Shed members with plenty of extra space to welcome new members and share their wide range of skills.
The new facility was officially opened on Friday, July 29 by Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce and Menai Men’s Shed President, Ken Howell.
In 2014 space was at a premium at the previous Menai Men’s Shed located in Alfords Point.
The council began working with the Club to identify an alternative location that would allow members to spread their saws, planes and lathes a little wider.
“Not only do Men’s Sheds provide men with an outlet to explore their hobbies and interests, they also help them to continue to feel valued by the community, share their skills and maintain a connection with other like-minded people,” Cr Pesce said.,
Menai Men’s Shed currently has 67 members aged between 22 and 91.
Activities on offer include carpentry, lead lighting, wood turning and lapidary, with metal work soon to be introduced.
At the opening, Engadine High School Year 12 student, Scott Parramore, thanked his mentors at the Men's Shed and displayed his Year 12 woodwork major piece, a handmade wooden electric guitar.
Menai Men’s Shed ,member, Jo Buchan expressed his thanks for the community support received by the club particularly Sutherland Shire Council, Hughes MP Craig Kelly, and State Member for Holsworthy, Melanie Gibbons.
Anyone interested in visiting Menai Men’s Shed is welcome to visit during opening hours which are 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
“We encourage people to show up when they like, and stay as long as they like,” Mr Buchan said.
The new location at The Ridge Sports Complex was selected because of the ample parking area, additional space for storage and the distance from residential areas which will minimise any noise impacts caused by machinery in use.
The Menai Men’s Shed is located at 13 Recreation Drive, Barden Ridge, within the grounds of The Ridge Sports Complex.
