A knee injury has forced St George Illawarra premiership-winning captain Ben Creagh to announce his retirement at the end of the season.
Creagh suffered the injury in round three against South Sydney, limiting him to three games this season.
The 31-year-old will retire as the second most-capped player in the club’s history only behind former captain Ben Hornby.
The 270-game veteran said he had loved his time playing for the Dragons but the injury had forced his hand.
“It has been hard decision to make with my heart willing me on to continue playing first grade for this great club but deep down I know this is the right decision to make,” he said.
“I have been so lucky being a local junior to have represented the Dragons and will retire at the end of the season with a lot of fond memories.”
Creagh made his first grade debut for the Dragons at the back end of 2003 against the New Zealand Warriors at Kogarah.
He won four Dragons’ player of the year awards (2007, 2009, 2010, 2014), with his 14-year career highlighted by the 2010 premiership and 2011 World Club Challenge titles.
Creagh also had the honour of representing Australia twice and played 11 State of Origins for NSW, with a further seven games for NSW Country.
“I have been so fortunate to accomplish so much with the pinnacle being the 2010 premiership win which was done with a terrific group of players and a lot of hard work and determination,” Creagh said.
“I have also had the opportunity to represent both my country and state which is a dream for every young player as well as being entrusted to captain the Dragons these past four seasons which I have done so with great pride and honour.”
St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor said Creagh had been a significant part of the club for more than a decade and a fine leader.
“He has led by example both on the field and off it so it is a shame that he has been forced to retire but his decision personifies his character in always wanting to put the club first,” he said.
“The entire playing squad wish him all the very best and we thank him for his invaluable contribution to the Dragons.”
