Sutherland police are warning local sporting teams to behave while celebrating the end of their sporting season.
It comes after a Illawong man, 22, was charged with drink-driving after driving home on Sunday after losing his soccer grand final.
Sutherland crime prevention officer Senior Constable David Hayes said police will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy towards anyone displaying anti-social behaviour while celebrating.
“The majority of teams and players act in a responsible manner when celebrating this sporting tradition but we’ve seen a number of ‘Mad Monday’ related parties being tarnished by players who commit alcohol related crime such as malicious damage, assault or drink-driving offences,’’ he said.
“This type of behaviour is criminal and will not be tolerated under any circumstances throughout the current finals campaign.
“It is the host’s responsibility to ensure the safety of their guests, which also extends beyond their residence or clubhouse.’’
Sutherland Licensing Supervisor Sergeant Scott Robinson said clubs were also responsible for the service of alcohol.
“Club officials are reminded to consider the conditions of their function licences and enforce the responsible service of alcohol,’’ he said.
"Responsible service of alcohol and adequate supervision of these functions is also an issue and police are reminding sporting club officials that the licensee or a person nominated by the licensee must be present on the premises at any time,’’ he said.
Police said to ensure a safe celebration clubs should register their party with local police, send out written invitations only, consider how their guests will get home and be responsible with service of alcohol, regardless of guests’ age.
