National Meals on Wheels Day (August 31) recognised the achievements of a valuable community service this month.
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos met with Sutherland Shire Food Services Meals on Wheels manager Susan Green, staff and volunteers to mark the occasion this year.
The Sutherland service has been in operation since 1967.
Their 67 volunteers deliver 42,000 meals each year to 250 clients across the Shire.
Ms Petinos says the annual celebration acknowledges the hard-working volunteers who are the helping hands of the community.
“These volunteers who are the backbone of the service, are involved in a range of tasks, from packing and delivering meals to administrative duties,” she said.
“It is the personal touch and community network of this service that sets it apart from other meal delivery services.
“The volunteers not only deliver nutritious meals, but also develop relationships, which helps make it possible for people to maintain their independence and stay in their homes.”
