Elouera Boardriders were gazumped in the annual Carve Dunny Bowl on Saturday when Cronulla Boardriders’ Jay Brown took the top prize. It was payback for last year’s Northies Alley Masters which was won by Elouera’s in-form Jared Hickel.
The 28th Northies Alley Masters is being held this Saturday so no one is claiming victory yet.
Jay also won the junior Dunny Bowl last weekend and finished ahead of Sharks club champion Jordan Widenstrom and Nathan Rohr.
Connor O’Leary missed the Dunny Bowl contest after he flew out to join the WSL European Qualifying Series with 12 events taking some of the best up-and-coming surfers across Israel, Spain, Portugal, France, England, Morocco and the Azores, where his Elouera club mates Jared Hickel and Shane Campbell are giving it a shake.
After Campbell’s British victory, Hickel backed it up with a fifth place in the Medec Ocean Lacanau Pro – a 1500-point comp won by Frenchman Joan Duru. Campbell is now in 135th place and Hickel 143rd with 630 points for his Lacanau result.
The French Basque Country also provided more valuable points when Australians Wade Carmichael and Claire Bevilacqua won the Pro Anglet on the weekend in clean two foot waves.
Both Cronulla surfers made the fifth round with Hickel just getting pipped for second by .7 to progress into the quarter-finals. Surfers will now move on to Galicia to compete at the upcoming QS6000 Pantin Classic Galicia Pro this week.
Meanwhile back at the Nulla, Cronulla surfers had another mixed bag this week with enough swell to keep you on your toes but not enough to get you excited.
The weekend had some good waves and good winds, bigger on Saturday when they held the Carve Dunny Bowl and a little smaller on Sunday.
Swellnet predicts a wait and see week with freshening N/NE winds on Tuesday afternoon will accompany a building swell.
A second, stronger pulse of southerly is then expected to push through overnight Tuesday, showing strongest across Sydney beaches early Wednesday morning before it dies down throughout the day. Once again, set waves will be inconsistent.
This morning showed a small peaky NE windswell, generated by Tuesday’s winds and which is still blowing this morning- this is expected to remain in place across the coast through Wednesday morning, before veering N’ly before lunch then NW into the afternoon .
So it looks like today will be your best time to surf, probably into the afternoon as this should see the best combination of two swells plus a better wind direction.
The rest of the week looks rather average with steadily easing swells from all regions and generally light variable winds as an unstable pattern develops.
The weekend looks good for the 28th annual Northies Alley Masters and at some point on Saturday, we’re looking at two swells, a short range N’ly swell on Saturday as the trough draws near the coast, and then a very large S’ly swell (Sunday) as the low pushes east into the Tasman Sea, driving southerly gales about Southern NSW.
Late September will see a mass of the world’s best surfers head to the Philippines island of Siargao and its perfect right-hander of Cloud 9 -for the 22nd Annual Siargao Surfing Cup QS1,500.
In its second year as a Qualifying Series (QS) 1,500 event the World Surf League will once again team up with the Asian Surfing Championship to co-sanction the event. This will no doubt help to attract some of the world’s best surfers hunting for qualifying points.
Placing third at Cloud 9 as a 16-year-old, Aussie Chris Zaffis can’t wait to get back to the Philippines, a place where he competed in his first ever QS event.
“I have been to Cloud 9 a few times now,” Zaffis said. “It’s been one of my favourite spots in the world and I’ve been going back every few years. It is such a sick little slab with some cool locals - I can’t wait to get back for sure.”
The 2016 Siargao Surfing Cup at Cloud 9 will get underway with an official opening ceremony and press conference on the 23rd of September.
In Queensland where the winners get invited to the Quicky trails, competitors on finals day of the 2016 Queensland Junior Surfing Titles were greeted with good conditions at the off-the-wall bank, which Duranbah has on offer. Clean waves in the 3ft range, providing the young juniors with loads of scoring potential which was sure to bolster competition for the final day of their 2016 State Title campaigns.
Capitalising was none other then Liam O’Brien who has been in-form throughout the duration of this years State Title series. The local from Burleigh Heads has had his eye on the golden ticket into the 2017 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Trials well before the beginning of this year’s series and was today successful in taking it home.
In the Under 18 Girls final the stacked round of eight ensured that only the best from this division were competing with the likes of Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, QLD), Ebony Wilson, (Elanora, QLD), Amber Dods (Sunrise Beach, QLD) and Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, QLD) successful in making it through a tough battle into the women’s final.
In the end it was Zahli’s dominance which couldn’t be matched as she had a strangle hold on the heat from start to finish. The win not only mean’s she’s made the Queensland Team but she will also be joining Liam O’Brien at next year’s Quiksilver & Roxy Pro Trials where she may even have the chance to compete up against the worlds best in the Championship Tour.
The NSW champion also gets to surf in the Quicky trails so its a good iniatitive .
