A number of local athletes will tackle the prestigious Ironman 70.3 World Championship event this weekend.
Carolyn Brace from Caringbah South, Cronulla’s Zoe Fitzgerald and former world champion Craig Alexander will all head to Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast for the event.
The race is exactly half the distance of the holy grail of triathlon – the Ironman World Championship held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
The 70.3 refers to the distance of the race in miles. In kilometres the athletes will cover a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and a 21.1km run.
The 70.3 world championship is in its 10th year, with this weekend’s event the first time ever it has been held in Australia.
A year of more than 90 qualifying events saw more than 200,000 athletes compete for the opportunity to become one of the more than 3000 athletes to line up on the Sunshine Coast.
The race will be run on Sunday morning, starting at 6.15am.
