A Kurnell family of five had a lucky escape after their home caught fire on Saturday night.
About 7.30pm emergency services were called to the Torres Street house to find a bedroom fully engulfed in fire.
The fire was extinguished by several Fire and Rescue NSW and Rural Fire Service firefighters.
The family including twin nine week old babies were able to escape without any injury.
RFS Sutherland Shire Inspector Scott Deller said fire crews were able to largely contain the fire to the bedroom area.
“The bedroom was completely destroyed by fire, with other parts of the house water and smoke affected,’’ he said.
“Firefighters did a fantastic job, in particular the Fire and Rescue crew from Cronulla who were first on scene.
“The residents action of closing the bedroom door and the brick construction was an important step in minimising damage to the remainder of the home.
“It is an important reminder about having a correctly installed and working smoke alarm. Smoke alarms do save lives.’’
The cause of fire is not believed to be suspicious.
