There was a lot of love in the room at Sharkies as the Sutherland Shire opened its heart and purse strings for the much acclaimed radio announcer, funny man and all round good guy Glenn Wheeler last week.
The “Wheels late lunch” was organised by his mates and family and raised around $70,000 to help in his ongoing treatment and rehabilitation after a tragic accident left him with a brain injury last year.
Eminent brain surgeon Charlie Teo started with a $10,000 donation and was matched by Peter Hall and a Cronulla family but it was radio maestro Alan Jones who threw in $20,000 saying “the most selfish thing a person can do is to give” – that set the tone for the day.
Jones was coming off his 101st rating win with radio 2GB and no matter what you think of his politics he is a man who has a gift of speaking – no notes, just a man with a microphone.
“I will cherish you forever, we've had a lot of good times and there is a lot of good times to be had,” Jones told the audience.
He added that he has a mission to get Glenn back to his microphone albeit with a good sound delay because he has developed a propensity to drop in an inappropriate word now and then.
Larry Emdur said some funny things about Glenn before his Chanel 7 family said “you can’t manage Glenn, you have to muster him”.
Glenn's Sutherland Shire family could only agree.
