Summer is on its way, and if you’re looking for something to do as the warmer weather approaches, ‘mermaiding’ classes are about the make a splash.
Launching in time for the school holidays on September 25, the classes are kicking off at Sutherland Leisure Centre.
The idea is to swim with a dolphin-shaped monofin.
Swimming instructor and business owner of No Ripples, Michaela Werner, who has experience as a lifeguard and surf lifesaver, is bringing the water activity sessions to the watery shores of Sutherland Shire.
“I discovered mermaiding through freediving five years ago,” she said.
“Freedivers use monofins to move through the water as efficiently as possible to save oxygen.
“It makes you feel like you’re part of the water, not just swimming on top of it.”
She says the 90-minute program is designed to stimulate kids’ love of water, imagination and play.
“It’s for kids 7-14 who already are confident swimmers and would like to learn new water skill,” she said.
“It combines water education with fun, freedom and skill while increasing swimming ability.”
The monthly class run from 3pm – 4.30pm.
