Georges River College student Valandou Contzonis is about to embark on a journey that gives Australian youth the chance to voice their views in front of the state’s political leaders.
The year 8 student from the Peakhurst campus is a participant in this year’s YMCA NSW junior Parliament.
She will join 80 of her peers from across the state on September 28-30 at Parliament, where they will work together and debate issues including climate, transport, mental health and multiculturalism.
Now in its 4th year, the program brings together year 7-9 students who are passionate about leadership and advocacy.
Valandou says she is proud of her Greek heritage and diverse cultural make-up of Australian society.
“The area I have been chosen to represent is the multicultural committee,” she said.
“I have an interest in changing how we see and treat each other as Australians.
“Being Australian means we are the same regardless of place of birth.
“We are a country that is proud and respects everyone, sees all Australians as equals, and a country that is united not because of our background or cultures but because we are Australian.
“We are the future leaders and it is very encouraging that our MPs are giving us the opportunity to voice our concerns, our positive contributions and solutions towards the problems facing the young people of NSW.”
