Not many teams get to experience winning a grand final – and even fewer get to do it in their first season.
But that’s exactly what St George’s under-14s women’s team have done.
St George won their division three championship match 40-36 over Bankstown late last month having finished second on the table after the regular season.
St George player Alexandra Manea was named most valuable player in the decider.
The team are also well led, with St George youth league men’s player Liam Angelis the girls’ coach with Christina Athanasiadis his assistant.
St George also competed in the Harbour Hoops tournament hosted by the Sydney Flames this season.
It was the first time the St George association had had a female team since 2004, with the association also entering an under-18s female side in the Basketball NSW Metro League.
The association aims to include further junior women’s teams next season in addition to a senior women’s side when trials are held in late October.
