Botanicals, the latest mosaic exhibition to launch at Hazelhurst Gymea from October 1 – 11 will showcase the impressive work by the gallery’s students.
Students have worked with glass, ceramics, tiles and sculptures to create artistic masterpieces.
Their brief was to photograph botanical subjects or find a piece that inspired them.
The 43 works of art are all hand-made and took 12 months to complete.
Scholars have traced mosaics back as far as the fourth millennium BC. For thousands of years, mosaics have been part of interior and exterior spaces.
They can be traced back to primitive man’s simple arrangements of pebbles into patterns, describing a direction or message.
The techniques gradually developed through history — from decorative floor and wall surfaces in villas and cathedrals to the modern expression of mosaics as art.
See the exhibition from 2pm – 4pm.
