The past three decades have been nothing short of rewarding for Loretta Turnbull.
The child and family health nurse retires this year after working for South Eastern Health Service at Caringbah Community Health Centre, which is part of Sutherland Hospital.
Mrs Turnbull, 64, of Alfords Point, marked her final day on the job on September 29, when she was farewelled by her colleagues.
She started her nursing career in the UK in 1973 before moving to Australia in 1981.
In 1990 she began work for South Eastern Health, and in that time has supported Sutherland Shire families.
Mrs Turnbull provided key support to parents through group discussions, has guided parents with newborn babies, educated woman about post-natal depression and revised antenatal programs for the hospital.
She says parenting advice is a key part of family discussion groups.
“There’s a focus on parenting and not so much the birthing experience – that lasts 24 hours, but parenting lasts a lifetime,” she said.
She says her career has been more than a job.
“I never thought I would leave,” she said.
“It’s been rewarding to help the community know what support services are available.
“It’s been a nice way to say goodbye.”
