From humble beginnings in the wilderness of the Cronulla sandhills at the end of a gravel road and housed in an ex-army hut, Wanda Surf Life Saving Club has proudly endured 70 years of voluntary service by safeguarding the beach-going community.
It was after the Second World War, a war that destroyed lives and families but also bound and strengthened communities, that a group of North Cronulla SLSC members banded together to start a new surf club.
The Wanda club was formed on October 13, 1946, with assistance from Sutherland Shire Council and the other two surf clubs.
A lot of stories will be told - and a lot of stories can't be told
- President Mark Sargeant
The distinctive club colours also came from the war effort - the sky blue of the Airforce, red of the army and the dark blue of the Navy – and patrols started at Wanda beach on March 9,1947. A new club was born.
There have been many incarnations of the club house since “the old tin shed” in 1949 but the new building that sits there today is another testament to the hard work of the members who raised the money and built it themselves, paying for the right to serve.
The 70th Wanda Surf Club re-union is being held on October 7 to 9 with Friday drinks, an official dinner on the Saturday and Sunday open day to the public in the upstairs “founder” room which is open to all every Sunday to enjoy a drink on the balcony.
Current club president Mark Sargeant said there will be a lot of reminiscing.
“The longer ago it was, the better you were – actually a lot of stories can’t be told,” Sargeant said.
“There are 1000 current members, including Nippers and the old members are getting older so its time to celebrate all things Wanda.”
And the significance of a decision in the 1980s won’t be forgotten.
“If it wasn't for the inclusion of women members in 1980 there wouldn't be a surf life saving movement they are that important,” Sargeant said.
There is one foundation member alive, Fred Richards and hopefully he will make it along to share a drink with club patron Earnest “Solly” Stevens, still going strong into his 80s and still swimming in the surf every day.
Noel Cox the club’s first ever Australian Gold medallist will be there as will former club presidents.
Wanda has a proud history of Rescue & Resuscitation competition.
